Mathasaur is one of the most attractive places in Kullu-Manali. Mathasaur is a sacred place located in Lugvalley, Kullu. The word ‘Mathasaur’ is derived from the two words ‘Matha’ and ‘Saur’. In the local language of Kullu, the word ‘Matha’ means ‘small’ and the word ‘Saur’ means ‘ a lake’. There is a temple of ‘Fungni Mata’. Every year there is a festival in the month of September which is celebrated with great pomp.
Mathasaur is a holy place so you need permission to go there and some rules have to be followed. Also, tobacco and leather are strictly prohibited in this area.
Mathasaur is also an excellent trekking site that passes through a forest of cedar. It is about 13 km from Kullu. It is an extremely beautiful place, with grasslands and dense forests. There is a large ground surrounded by cedar trees which looks very beautiful. The place offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and villages. At night, the starry sky becomes attractive, making you feel somewhat different from the world.
How to reach Mathasaur
Via Road:
- Via Kullu-Bhumteer Rd: To reach Mathasaur from Kullu city you have to go towards Lugvalley road to Bhumteer (12 km). After reaching Bhumteer where the road ends, the small trek towards Mathasaur through the dense cedar forest begins. It hardly takes 35-40 minutes to reach the open place after crossing the forest.
- Via Kullu-Jathani Rd: You can also reach Mathasaur via Jathani village. This route gives you ample treks and mesmerizing views to reach Mathasaur. It hardly takes 40-45 minutes to reach Mathasaur after completing your 13 km road journey to Jathani. This is also a very easy and convenient way to reach Mathasaur.
