Bijli Mahadev Temple is one of the ancient temples of the valley and is dedicated to Lord Shivji. This temple is famous for its miracle and panoramic view.
Geographical view of Bijli Mahadev
This temple of Lord Shivji is located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. What miracle happens there?
According to the local people, lightning strikes the Shivling every 12 years and some say that lightning strikes every year or 2-3 years, causing the Shivling to break into pieces. The priest then attaches the broken lingam to butter and after a few days, the lingam becomes as it was. Hence it is known as Bijli Mahadev. Local people also call this Shivling as ‘Makhan Mahadev’, while some call it the Shivling of Bijli Mahadev.

The story and history behind the miracle
According to ancient legend, the vast valley here is in the form of a snake killed by Mahadev (Lord Shivji). About this holy abode of Shiva, several thousand years ago there used to be a demon named Kulantaka, also known as Jalandhar. Once this demon who looked like a python or a big snake tried to drown the valley by stopping the flow of the river Vyas. When Lord Mahadev came to know about this, he killed Kulantak with his trident. It is believed that after death the body of Kulantak turned into a mountain. It is believed that Kullu is a shortened form of Kulantaka’s name.

After slaying that demon, Shivji ordered Indra Dev to drop celestial lightning on the body of this demon after every 12 years. It is said about the celestial lightning falling on the Shivling that Lord Shivji did not want that when the lightning fell, public wealth should be harmed by it, in such a situation, he made this lightning fall on himself. Since then this tradition has miraculously continued to date.
